April Fools Day Foods

Most of these examples we made for the elementary cake walk, but these would be so fun to prank your family with for April Fool’s Day too.  Which one is your favorite?

Rice Krispee "Meats"

This is the website I used for great instructions on the Rice Krispee "Meats". They were easy and messy to make! Very similar to making rice krispee treats, but read the article for tips and tricks on how to make it look very realistic. As always the key is in the details. Ask the butcher at your grocery store if you can have some of their styrofoam trays and the stickers are key too (if you are really good you can make your own creative stickers as well).

Breadstick Cigarettes

These aren't the candy cigarettes we had as kids, but they are still fun and edible. Breadstick, dipped in white chocolate then dipped in chunky brown sugar mixed with black food coloring (or some red food coloring so it looked as if they were still lit). Maybe for your more grown-up April Fool's Day trick.

Cookie Pizza

This was a prize winner at the school Cake Walk. I found a similar guide at Hungry Happenings from Pinterest to walk you through it step by step. They key is to ask a local pizza restaurant if you can have one of their boxes. You roll out the pre-made cookie dough into the shape of a circle shaped pizza pan and bake according to directions. Then cover in red frosting, drizzle on white frosting to look like cheese and add your toppings. We made pepperoni from fruit leather and used chocolate covered raisons to look like olives. We also found some green little candies that worked well for an added green pepper touch.

Kitty Litter

Perhaps our biggest hit at the school Cake Walk (they might be glad we have graduated from elementary school as we kept getting a little grosser each year). I took the directions from Amee's Savory Dish after I found her on Pinterest. I love how some of the things that make the biggest splash are the absolute easiest to make.

Below you can see what a hit it was at the entry drop off!

Dolphin Penis

Before you get scared off, just know this was awesome for our elementary age boys. We just took these Dried Baby Bananas from Trader Joes...

Made a fake label and turned them into "Organic Dried Dolphin Penis"

Click on the video below to see how the full prank played out. They were completely "April fooled"!!

Ice Cream Baked Potato

Living in Idaho this is a totally normally thing. The beloved Westside Drive-Thru has made these famous, but you can easily make your own. Just shape vanilla ice cream into a potato shape and freeze. Roll in cocoa powder. Slice open and you can use bananas or vanilla pudding for butter, whip cream for sour cream and I'm sure you could come up with something creative for chives or bacon on top! These are so fun and so delicious! Perfect April Fool's Day dessert!

Make Meatloaf Fun!

Meatloaf Skull

While this one might be more appropriate for Halloween, it is still pretty great on April Fool's Day, or any other night you are trying to get your kids interested in helping you cook dinner. Just shape your meatloaf into the shape of a skeleton skull (don't forget to indent the nose). Use chopped onion for the teeth as well as the eyes complete with olives for the eyeballs.

For the less gory...

Meatloaf Man

This meatloaf man came about after I asked my oldest what he wanted for dinner that night. His cheeky answer was "my brother", and he was really surprised when I said, "Okay, come help me make him!". Again, all he did was shape the meatloaf into "his brother" and then we baked him and dressed him up with mashed potato pants, a shredded zucchini shirt and some fried onion hair and little face touches. He was so cute we could hardly eat him (actually that's a lie, I think they ate more meatloaf that night then ever before)!
