Back to School T-Shirt Photo Time Capsule

I came across this idea at the height of my Pinterest days when my kids were little and it is one of the the few Pinterest ideas, out of the many I tried, that I would consider a win. It is just mind-blowing to me that when I bought these shirts that were a men's size medium, that they would ever actually fit into them, and now, just a few, quick years later, they are the correct size for my oldest son. It is cruel and true that the days are long and the years are short, although anymore, the days are feeling short too!

I hope this reaches some of you with young ones in time to do this from the very start (or share with your nieces and nephews with littles), but it is never too late to start this cute tradition. Simple enough even for the novice crafter, just head to your closest Michaels or dare to set foot in a Joann's or Walmart, or anywhere else you can get a plain white Hanes t-shirt and iron on letters. Do the math of when your cute little babe will be graduating high school and iron those letters on. Honestly the trickiest part is making sure you keep this t-shirt somewhere handy that you will know where it is at the beginning of each school year (even through multiple moves). Bonus if you have your old graduation cap to have them adorn on their little heads. Take a photo (or 50) on the first day of school.

A couple of things we have learned or would do differently now that we are 10 years into this photo time capsule project:

  • I would recommend taking the photo the day or night before the first day of school. That first morning is always so hectic, so adding in an outfit change and trying to get good moods and photos can be tough. Also, the older they get the crazier those mornings get- maybe you're dashing off to work, or they walk with buddies to school, etc.

  • Right away start an album on your iPhone to keep all of these photos in one spot. It wasn't until this year that I decided I wanted to see all of the photos together and it was kind of a pain to go back to each year, plus technology changes, etc. Start right away by keeping them all in one spot.

  • If I could start over I would have them do at least one pose that is the exact same each year. Just plain, standing still, arms at their side or something to really see how much they have grown and changed each year. Bonus points if you are in the same home or can have the same background in each photo too.
