Book Recommendations for Elementary Age Boys from a Mom of Three

Hi, my name is Nicole and I love to read! I have always loved to read! One of my

early childhood memories is teaching (or at least trying to teach) my younger sister how

to read. Today I am a mom of 3 boys and to my delight, my youngest shares my love of

reading! I wanted to share with you a few of our favorite books!

This year my book lover is in third grade. His teacher started off the school year

reading the book, Fish in a Tree. My son loved it so much right from the start that he

asked if we could order the book and read it together at home! We did and we both

loved it and promptly ordered two additional books written by the same author and we

devoured those as well! These books address topics like growing up with dyslexia (Fish

in a Tree), life as a child in the foster care system (One for the Murphy’s) and the highs

and lows of friendship and absent parents (Shouting at the Rain).

Last year, Jack and I read 2 book series that we loved! The first of these book

series is The Wild Robot trilogy. The Wild Robot is the story of a robot that accidentally

washes up on an island inhabited only by wild animals. The robot learns to adapt and

override her programming to become one with the wild. The Wild Robot is a book that

all 3 of my boys read in 2nd grade and they all loved it! We highly recommend you read

the first book and then go and see the movie! We loved the movie too!

The second book series that we really enjoyed last year is The Humphrey

Collection. The Humphrey Collection is an adorable 12 book series that follows the

sweet & hilarious adventures of Humphrey, the beloved classroom pet hamster, and the

class in Room 26 at Longfellow School. My son enjoyed this series so much, he just

asked me to start reading the series over again this month!

Another book series that we have and continue to enjoy is Dragon Masters,

which is perfect for 1st-3rd grade readers. My 3rd grade son is currently devouring the

Dogman books himself and my fifth grade son continues to enjoy the ever popular Diary

of a Wimpy Kid series. I hope if you choose to pick up any of these books that you will

enjoy them as much as we have! :)
