No really. I have to mention this first and foremost because this blog would 100% not be happening if it wasn’t for this podcast motivating the shit out of me. I first got to know Rachel Hollis, as most of the world did, from her bestselling book Girl Wash Your Face. I loved it, I recommended it and read the follow-up book Girl, Stop Apologizing. After a hiatus from her for a few years, I was excited to see that she was doing a podcast and now find myself listening to most of the episodes, mainly because I'm a self-help junkie, but also because her delivery is both motivating and entertaining. This podcast is now in my weekly rotation and I like a lot of what she has to say, but a few of them have been pure gold and changed my life. I thought I would highlight the two episodes that specifically got this Babble thing going. The one that started it, and the one that finished it.
The one that started it:
This was one of the first Rachel Hollis Podcast episodes I listened to. I had just finished a nice long hike with a girlfriend and our dogs where I had been babbling on and on to her all about not knowing what my next step should be. I had tried, unsuccessfully, to go back to work after a decade of being a stay-at-home mom the year prior. Since I hadn’t had luck finding the unicorn job that paid well, was interesting and ultra flexible, I decided to refocus on being content as a stay-at-home mom. And although I am really good at filling up my time while the boys are at school with any and all friends, dogs and activities, I was drawn to spending my days focused on something more fulfilling (and still hitting the occasional girlfriend lunch). I began asking myself questions like, “Should I just focus on making money?” “Should I focus on charitable initiatives?” “Should I just suck it up and find an okay job and shut-up already?” I was feeling burned out on all of the hours spent volunteering for the school PTA. What did I want to do? I've always loved the quote, "One life. Just one. Why aren't we running like we're on fire towards our wildest dreams?" so of course the title of this episode struck me.
Listening to her Hacks for Figuring Out What You Want In Life, is really where the idea for Babble became more clear and solidified, and I decided to actually go for it and stop just thinking and talking about it. Specifically the “What would Oprah do?” question.
The one that finished it:
Well into the creation of Babble I was hitting roadblocks (mainly with technology). Figuring out how to put together a website and any sort of graphic design aren’t my jam. I really want them to be, but man that stuff just does not come naturally to me and it didn’t seem like unlimited hours of YouTube tutorials were going to get me there. Rachel dropped this episode just when I needed to hear it and it kicked my ass into gear to get this thing across the finish line.
There were several episodes in between the ones listed above that helped keep me on track when this whole idea seemed silly or impractical or just felt daunting. She’s got a little something for everyone on here. Mom and middle age women stuff, a ton for entrepreneurs and overall goal inspiration and motivation. Do yourself a favor and "Girl, listen to the podcast".
