Writer's picture: Sindi DurickoSindi Duricko

I've been ohhing and ahhing and turning green with envy at my friend Sindi's time spent living as an expat in Copenhagen, especially during the winter holidays. Below she shares a list of 10 must see spots and must do activities when visiting København (yes I had to google it, it is the same as Copenhagen) during December. Sindi shares her inside scoop and Babbles with us about all of her favorites that will give you a real taste of the Scandinavian experience.

In no particular order...

  1. Santa Lucia parade in Nyhavn

This is a long tradition in Scandinavian countries as a way of celebrating light during the dark winters.

  1. Christmas Markets

Visit the various Christmas markets around the city. You will find unique and traditional gifts for all.

While you are out checking out the sites, stop in for a taste of the season at D’Angleterre.

This is a luxury hotel located at the King’s Square. They serve Gløgg and æbleskiver.

A fun fact we got a glimpse of Barak Obama when he stayed at the D’Angleterre during his visit! There are a lot of politicians and celebrities that stay there.

4. Strøget

Do some shopping on Strøget, commonly known by expats as the walking street. It’s lined with restaurants and high end and local shops such ILum.

Go back in time at Tivoli Gardens Amusement park. It is always seasonally decorated and offers a fun time for the entire family. It is also the second oldest amusement park in the world.

  1. Visit the Royal Copenhagen Flagship Store

Visit the Royal Copenhagen flagship store. Every true Dane knows and owns a piece of these hand painted porcelain pieces.

  1. Nyhavn Harbor

Find a table at one of the many restaurants on the famous Nyhavn harbor. It’s the most recognizable harbor in Denmark

8. Buy an advent candle

Danes love their countdowns and Christmas is a favorite time of year for this.

9. Pick up a Nisse

Denmark was very big on farming and the story of these mischievous elves or gnomes has a long history in the Danish folklore.

10. Take a spin on the ice!

There are several ice rinks that pop up just for the winter months. One of our favorites is in the center of the city at Broens Skoejtebane.
