For me Essential Oils are something I’ve always wanted to get more involved in, but have only dabbled with here and there. I asked my Essential Oil guru, Anissa, what she would recommend as her top Essential Oils and what their most common uses are, to someone like me who really doesn’t have a clue. Here are her recommendations to get us started. (BTW- no one is getting a dime from any sales from this article, so it is not some weird pyramid scheme, just some girls talking about oils and trying to get our house to smell like a spa.)
Diffusing is a great way to use Essential Oils. Not only will your house smell great, but there are added health benefits as well. Plus, you get to get yourself a really cute new decorative diffuser. In fact, that is the first step. Get a good quality diffuser, that really diffuses the oils and water, that way it doesn't gunk up the table you are sitting the diffuser on. A good one with have a super fine mist coming out. Here are some quality ones from Young Living.
Stinky Smell Solution:
Purification. This smells great diffused but you can also put a drop on a cotton ball and throw it in the bottom of your trash can, in stinky shoes, gym bags, diaper genie, etc. You can also put a drop or two on your laundry dryer balls to have your clothes come out smelling nice!
Health Support:
Thieves- This is my absolute favorite for all things, but mainly anytime I feel like I'm getting sick I use Thieves in my diffuser. I diffuse it anytime anyone in the house is sick, to support them and to help others in the house stay healthy. It's an immune booster, anti-fungal, antiviral, antibacterial and purifies the air (plus it smells good). This is a cult favorite and you can find all of the zillions of Thieves products that Young Living sells here.
Eucalyptus Radiata- great for stuffy noses to open things up and help you breathe. I use this when we are getting sick, with clogged up noses or coughs and it really helps!
Seasonal Support:
If you are having trouble with allergies, dry or itchy eyes or stuffy nose, a blend of the essential oils below will help with that. Do a couple of drops of each depending on your room size. I would do 5 drops of each for the large, open area of my house.
Smile Brightener:
Orange: this is a natural whitener. Put a drop on your toothpaste when you are brushing to help whiten your teeth!
A couple of hints for those of us just getting started.
Make sure you are buying quality Essential Oils. So many have different fillers and are not 100% pure. Be sure to only buy ones that are 100% pure. In most cases, you get what you pay for.
I find it really helpful to keep a water bottle by each diffuser and a cute bowl with your go-to EO for quick access to filling.
Check out Nesting with Grace. She always has great oil blends to diffuse and great information about what each essential oil is good for.
