When you think of your best Valentine's Day, what memory comes to mind first? I’ve had some really good Valentine’s Days, but if I had to choose a favorite, this one would be on the top of my list.
This was even before Covid, but I’ve never been a big fan of going out to an obligatory fancy dinner on Valentine’s Day (any other day of the year- yes please). We’ve done it, but you just kind of sit there looking around at everyone doing the same thing, eating the same foods from the same “special” menu and it just seems so boring and expected. Since we had kids we’ve been trying to incorporate them into our traditions. It usually includes some form of fondue, which is happening again this year and which we all love, but this particular year I really wanted to introduce my growing boys to a great movie about real, genuine love. That's right, Can’t Buy Me Love.
Man I love that movie, and I hadn’t seen it in decades (still crushing on both Cindy Mancini as much as Ronald Miller). My husband had never seen it so my Valentine’s request was that we all watch it together. We made a giant charcuterie board, poured up glasses of wine and Dr. Pepper and snuggled up on a blanket covered floor in our living room. Of course everyone loved the movie. There was enough high school drama to keep my elementary age kids interested, and throwback fun for the husband, all while sprinkling in great messages about being yourself and how to treat people that makes my mom heart so happy. I’ve thought about redoing this night, same move and everything, now that it’s been a few years. Who knows, maybe this will be my Valentine’s request again this year too?!
What is your most cherished Valentine's Day? I'm guessing it wasn't a big fancy dinner out or getting a dozen roses.
Side note, for about 10 years I just asked my husband to renew my US Weekly magazine subscription instead of getting me flowers for Valentine's Day. Never regretted that choice.
