While my kiddos have been setting records for number of hours spent playing Fortnite during their snow days off from school, my friend Lisa down the street has been building the igloo, and memories of a lifetime, with her family. Their igloo is now the talk and envy of the neighborhood and I'm so glad she is sharing this with all of us to inspire more creativity and fun this really cold January.
Lisa found the idea on Pinterest after searching for something fun to do in the snow with her family on Martin Luther King Day since they would be out of school.
They started by freezing water in around 200 aluminum lasagna trays that they purchased at the dollar store. The kids added food coloring to the water and LOVED creating different colors.
Then they created a perfect circle with a stick and string.
Next, they stacked the frozen ice blocks, securing them in place with a thick slushy mixture of ice and water. With our cold temperatures the individual blocks would freeze together quickly allowing them to build up and up!
It took about three days to complete and all of the kids in the neighborhood wanted to help. Lisa's kids, Lilli and Anders, along with their neighbors and friends, Asher, Evan and Sofia put in about 15 hours each to help build this creation. They were committed even during the super cold temperatures! They found it to be the perfect winter activity for ages 7+.
It looks magnificent illuminated at night!!
They simply plugged in a light and placed it inside to illuminate it. Absolutely dreamy!
Lisa Arnold is the Visual Arts Director at TRICA in Boise. This fun family weekend igloo project comes just on the heels of the magic she and Founder Jon Swarthout created for TRICA's Snow Globe event. She just continues to inspire the community, at work and at play.
I overheard Lisa and her daughter discussing how to decorate the inside and what blankets to take in there. This will no doubt be something they talk about and remember forever. Parenting and life win for sure!!
