Streaming Sister July 2024- 12 of the Best Shows to Stream Right Now

Some fantastic shows were back for new seasons this month and I also found myself entangled in some great documentaries. Dig in to see what I’ve been up to this past month!

Apple TV+

You know a show is good when you’re yelling at the TV right? Well I have had my fair share of comments about this show! Jake Gyllenhaal, Ruth Negga, O-T Fagbenle and Peter Sarsgaard star in this Apple TV+ series that has me infuriated more each week. A Chicago prosecutor becomes the suspect of a crime against their own takes a look into the politics of the office, the family affected and bad blood everywhere you look. While the series hasn’t ended yet, I think I know who did it (I guess we’ll see)….

Streaming Sister Thoughts – If you thought Taylor Swift is the only thing that could make you hate Jake Gyllenhaal – watch this show, he’s a bastard.

Defending Jacob- Apple TV+

I almost didn’t watch this because for some reason both the hubby and I thought we had already seen it. This is a 2020 mini series starring Chris Evans, Michelle Dockery and Jaeden Martell. Another series based on a NYT best selling novel, I was hooked from episode 1. Remarkably similar storyline to Presumed Innocent, a district attorney is investigating the murder of a 14 year old boy who is removed from the case when his son becomes the prime suspect. I really enjoyed how this story was told from his father while testifying. Love a surprise ending, and this did not disappoint.

Streaming Sister Thoughts – I enjoyed the minor characters as much as the main ones. If I’m ever in legal trubble hire Cherry Jones as my attorney! And JK Simmons as Andy’s father was excellent!

Disney

The Acolyte- Disney

A new storyline from the Star Wars franchise. Based on a crime spree taking out Jedi Masters. Starring Amandla Stenberg (in two roles) and Lee Jung-jae, my husband has been waiting for a new series to binge and it’s finally here. Bad news, we don’t like it at all.

Streaming Sister Thoughts – when my husband rewatches an episode because he “must’ve missed something” but realizes, nope – just nothing fun happened, it’s a bad sign. I also DESPISE the twin story line and this one is epically painful. SKIP.

Hulu

Fair warning, I haven’t finished this yet. Everyone’s favorite The Bear is back for Season 3. This show makes me anxious in a way I can’t explain, I’m clearly not cut out for being a line chef (or behind the scenes in any way in a kitchen). After an amazing season 2 I had my hopes real high for season 3. Too high? Perhaps. Starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, this season focused a lot on what brought everyone together. It’s nice. Not really necessary. I do reserve the right to change my opinion as I have 4 episodes left, it could be a masterpiece.

Streaming Sister Thoughts – While watching the first episode, I had to explain to my daughter why Jeremy Allen White is good looking. Is that weird? I guess she’s too young to appreciate the Shameless appeal. Also, if rumors of Jeremy and Ayo dating are true – I.Am.Here.For.It.

Clipped- Hulu

I love a sports drama, and when based on a true story? You’ve got me hooked. Clipped shows the headline stealing story of the Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling who’s “assistant” taped him making some horribly racist comments and they leaked. Great cast of Laurence Fishburne, Jacki Weaver, Cleopatra Coleman and Ed O’Neill. Some great performances amongst them all, while I don’t think it will win any amazing awards, I enjoyed it!

Streaming Sister Thoughts – Initially it was Ed O’Neill stealing the show as delusional Donald Sterling, but I ended up enjoying Jacki Weaver the most, playing his high school sweetheart wife – is she clueless or the smartest person in the room?

Netflix

Dear Child- Netflix

I don’t mind foreign shows that are poorly dubbed in English, I should start there. This has been in my Netflix list as a show I should watch forever now, I finally pulled the trigger. A woman and a child emerge from captivity, and now they have to figure out who they are to solve a disappearance 13 years ago. Starring Kim Riedle, Naila Schuberth and Sammy Schrein, this is based on an international bestselling novel of the same name.

Streaming Sister Thoughts – I may have figured this one out. Not bad, not the best of the month. Interesting story line and the children were heartbreaking to watch reacclimate to the ‘real world’.

Peacock

I freaking love the Olympics, from opening ceremony to closing ceremony. Every year I record the daily events and then fast forward through them to the events I want to watch. This Olympics, however, Peacock is streaming both the trials and the Olympics and you can search for your favorite sport and watch just that. Commercials are annoying, my daughter now calls Simone Biles mom “diabetes lady”, and they don’t have it well organized – but I’m hoping by Olympic times that they get that under control.

Streaming Sister Thoughts – our former neighbor competed in the diving trials and we were all glued to the Peacock to watch her perform and see a special tribute to her parents and their contributions to diving. She isn’t going this year (she’s only 18) but we’re cheering her on for next Olympics!!!

Prime

Not sure if it is clear by now or not, but apparently I’m a huge Olivia Coleman fan and British crime drama. This is another oldie that I was unaware of and I’ve only watched season one so far. This season addresses the murder of a young boy and I did NOT see where this was going! Starring my girl Olivia and David Tennant, season one is included in Amazon Prime and the series ran from 2013-2017.

Streaming Sister Thoughts: I’m not often wrong watching shows when I guess where they are going (my husband must LOVE that I do this) – but I was WRONG a couple of times here. I’ve got to start on additional seasons!

Max

I know, I reviewed Season 1 last month, but I was prepping for this! While this season is also not over, I have thoroughly enjoyed Season 2 of House of the Dragon. Starring Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith and Ewan Mitchell – I am 100% house of the black. However, I’m finding myself sick that I still like Prince Daemon Targaryen and for some reason this season I kind of enjoy Ewan Mitchell – who I HATED at the end of season one.

Streaming Sister Thoughts – Hats off to the acting of Emma and Olivia who are two bad ass women protecting their families and able to see each person’s point of view. Oh, if only women ruled the world.

Max Documentaries

Okay, I squishing a few of my favorite docs this month that came out on Max. Fully entertaining all!

The true story of a family torn apart by schizophrenia, six of the 12 siblings develop in their lifetime and what that means to the rest of them standing.

Streaming Sister Thoughts – while initially impressed by the sister interviewed (Mary), I walked away feeling that it’s too much for any one person to oversee. What a heavy responsibility she’s given herself.

What I loved about this documentary is that they focused on a psych unit dedicated to the treatment of young adults, particularly college students with self-harm tendencies. Each patient shares their own story of stress, relationships, family and trauma that drive home the need for this type of support.

Streaming Sister Thoughts – the map showing all the colleges represented by patients was utterly frustrating. Understanding the need for more mental health support for this age group can’t be said enough.

From serious to silly, Ren Faire tells the story of King George Coulam, who founded the Texas Renaissance Festival, built and incorporated a town around it (of course he is the mayor), and employs thousands. He is ‘ready’ for retirement, and it’s a full on feud to see who will be his heir.

Streaming Sister Thoughts – Okay, this is NOT going to win any prizes, and drags from time to time, but I was entirely entertained by the madness of King George’s house, his quest for a spouse, and the interesting personalities he employs.
