Streaming Sister June 2024- 10 of the Best Shows to Stream Right Now

We are in that time of year where there seems to be a dry spell of new shows. So, I’ve watched some older shows as well this month that you might have missed as well to keep you entertained when it’s too hot to be outside!

Apple TV+

Past Lives – Apple TV

Humble brag, I won our family’s 2024 Oscar competition (it’s cut throat) and I watched so many of the movies that were nominated, but I missed out on this one. There are a lot of subtitles for those of you who hate reading your movies, but the chemistry of the stars in this movie was too good to miss. Twenty years after Nora moves from South Korea she is reunited with her first love Hae. What could’ve been, what could be?

Streaming Sister Thoughts: the ad for this movie says it will make you catch your breath. Ironically I was holding my breath in the final scenes and then cried like a baby.

Hulu

A true story based on a book tells the story behind the murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk that sent shockwaves through Canada. Starring Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone, this was a hit and miss for me. The story lines were trying to pull together, but some fell short. The soundtrack of the 90s rap is definitely for a certain generation and watching these girls destroy one another can be difficult at times. A couple episodes in I started to lose interest, but we stuck with it and I’m glad I did at the end.

Streaming Sister Thoughts: Chloe Guidry could be the breakout unknown in this – her RBF (resting bitch face) was amazing as the tough teen who wanted to be a mobster.

Netflix

Eric – Netflix

So this one is tough. Benedict Cumberbatch plays a father of a missing son. But the first episode was so weird with a life size muppet that his son created following him around that we almost stopped there. I’m glad we didn’t. This is not an easy watch, you want to strangle the dad on multiple occasions. But once you realize all the demons he’s dealing with things become more clear. Not a light hearted show, but it kept us invested once we got over the odd.

Streaming Sister Thoughts: This is not the Jim Henson documentary or Dark Crystal….

If you don’t like Bridgerton, you don’t like my reviews. And that’s okay. But I love period pieces and Bridgerton never disappoints. I’ve read the books. They have brought them to life so spectacularly. Nicola Coughlan, I adore from previous roles (Derry Girls is a great show to watch as well) and has created a familiar character you can’t help but to root for at the end of the day.

Streaming Sister Thoughts: June 13th can’t get here soon enough for part 2! Also is it true they are dating in real life???? IRL???? I am so on board with this.

Peacock

Based on the novel, this real-life story of Lali Sokolov looking back at his experience of tattooing arrivals at Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp is actually a love story above all. Starring Jonah Hauer-King, Anna Prochniak and Melanie Lynskey – you will find yourself lost in the here and now and the flashbacks that are so beautifully filmed.

Streaming Sister Thoughts:  Did I have a crush on Jonah during this? Yes. Did I have a crush on him in the live version of The Little Mermaid? No. What’s wrong with me?

Prime

The Idea of You – Amazon Prime

Okay, I’m on a roll – third one based on a book, maybe I should’ve made that a theme! This one I know you’ve heard about because Babble posted about it. This is one of my sister and I’s favorite book and we disagree on the film adaptation. Anne Hathaway – was not thrilled when she was the lead – but she changed my mind. Nicholas Galitzine, he is in EVERYTHING these days. The book is electric. The movie was battery powered. The ending has changed, it doesn’t do the book’s heartbreak justice.

Streaming Sister Thoughts: Read the book. Then re-read the book.

Maxton Hall – Amazon Prime

Another show based on a book, but I have not read it. This is not for those that hate dubbed movies. The story of a scholarship student Ruby and a millionaire heir James working to get into THE college. But if you love a good teen – I love him/ I hate him with hot chemistry. Worth it. These two were fantastic together. I loved every cheesy minute of this and hope more is to come!

Streaming Sister Thoughts: High school kids don’t look like this.

The Fall – Amazon Prime

Okay – this one goes back in time. How did I miss this???? Three seasons from 2013-2016 starring Gillian Anderson as complicated policewoman and Jamie Dornan as a serial killer leading a double life. This was THE BEST thing I watched this month. I am so glad I stumbled upon this recently on Prime. Gillian Anderson is spectacular as a smart strong female role that I loved (and apparently is her favorite she’s ever played, more than X Files). And seeing Jamie in a role other than 50 Shades of Grey was great. He really was convincing as a sicko. If you love British murder mystery – put this in your que.

Streaming Sister Thoughts: It is possible this show has me going down a British serial killer rabbit hole. Keep tuned next month for where I go next….

Max

This is from 2022, when I first watched it – the spin off from Game of Thrones. With season 2 coming in July, we needed to rewatch because we couldn’t remember it and it had been too long. One episode in we immediately were back into the drama and horrible family dynamics immediately. GOT and HOD are not for everyone – they are for mature audiences for sure. But rewatching this has me ready for Season two!

Streaming Sister Thoughts: I bend the knee to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. Also, the most realistic and disturbing labor and delivery scenes in any show I’ve ever watched.  Wow.

Hacks – Max

Okay, lighter topic here . Hacks has almost lost me a couple of times, but this Season 3 is the best yet. Jean Smart stars as a legendary Vegas comedian trying to fight her way back to the top. Watching her deal with generational differences and sensitivities is hilarious. This is Jean Smart’s best role ever.

Streaming Sister Thoughts: Season 3 Episode 5’s trip into the woods made me laugh so hard I woke up my husband. “Why are you doing this to me? I don’t even know you.” was in my head for days.
