Streaming Sister May 2024- 10 of the Best Shows to Stream Right Now

It’s been a hit or miss month this month with new shows. Below are my highlights and lowlights from Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, Peacock, HBO Max and Prime Video.

Netflix

Baby Reindeer – Netflix

Starring Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning. This was a hit and then a miss for me. Started strong and I even told my mom to check it out, then turned super dark and I had to call her to say nevermind . I stuck with it to the end and became more and more frustrated with Donny the lead character and how he handled just about everything. If you’ve started it, finish it – if you haven’t started it, I’d pass. Interestingly, also based on a true story, but this just made me sad.

Ripley – Netflix

So I started this when we were on a dry spell. I was not excited to watch this. Boy, did it suck me in. Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley is not your Matt Damon version. I thought there would be no surpassing The Talented Mr. Ripley. And while Dakota Fanning is not the charming Marge that Gwyneth Paltrow was in the movie, she is suspicious from the start and endearingly naive. Beautiful cinematography and makes me want to book a trip to Italy again!

OJ: Made in America – Netflix

My husband was CONVINCED we had seen this back in 2016 when it came out. But this was an ESPN “30 for 30” that is almost 8 hours long. I did not take part in this. With OJ’s recent passing, I found this to be a wonderful documentary that enraged me, made me laugh and included so many key figures in interviews. I may have flipped off the screen a few times, but definitely worth the watch. Jeff and I had the conversation, where were you when…..(car chase, verdict, etc.).

Hulu

Based on the true story of the Kurcs family,  this series follows the Jewish family through World War II from Poland and beyond. Starring Joey King as a feisty young woman navigating the horrors of her situation along with her siblings, and parents. What makes it haunting is the fact that it is a true story, stick around at the end for the “where are they now” moments and pictures.

Apple TV+

Loot Season 2  – Apple TV

This show is either a little too much for me or I can’t stop laughing. Episode 3 of Season 2 found so much humor in the late night smoke detector battery beeping that I was crying. Maya Rudolph and Joel Kim Booster steal the show for me. If it was just the two of them, I would be binging it 24/7.

Peacock

Apples Never Fall– Peacock

Annette Bening, Sam Neill, Jake Lacy…pretty fun cast. This was another up and down adventure for me. Started strong, then it felt like it was never going to end, then picked back up. Based on Liane Moriaty’s book (Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers), a family obsessed with tennis and the secrets of the past. Not the best thing I watched, but definitely had some twist and turns.

Did you watch The Lord of the Rings and lean over to your sister and ask, “Do I have a crush on an elf?” No? Just me? Okay so Orlando Bloom might’ve been a teenage crush of mine, but this is a very different side of him. This is a docuseries following Bloom on a journey to push himself – physically and mentally in three different scenarios. Great option for kids who might benefit from seeing someone push themselves beyond what they think is possible. I loved it. Also great cameos by Katy Perry.

Max

Okay, this one is for my husband. I don’t think I’ve seen him giggle this much while watching a show ever. This docuseries follows Conan O’Brien as he travels the world surprising strangers he’s engaged with on his podcast. Is it juvenile? Yes. Are there funny laughs? Yes. Dry humor? You bet. If my husband’s in a mood, I’m throwing one of these on.

Prime

I randomly stumbled upon this show while cruising prime and thought I’d check it out. Such a unique story line of a messed up girl who inherits her grandfather’s home where people historically go to commit suicide off a cliff. Yeah, hadn’t heard this story told before either. Staring Thomasin McKenzie as Vivian – this show handles a lot of serious topics and relationships with grace and humor. Definitely recommend. Trigger warnings galore!

Fallout – Prime

My husband is a huge Walton Goggins fan (Justified, Vice Principals, The Hateful Eight) so we had to check this out. My favorite review was Babble’s own Brooke who couldn’t stop saying “Oh my gosh” while watching this violent, post-apocalyptic series – so much so that her youngest son got seriously frustrated with her. As far as this genre goes, decent story, liked Ella Purnell’s character, and one of those lovely cliffhanger endings.
