Streaming Sister September 2024- 10 of the Best Shows to Stream Right Now

Well, there have been some highs and lows over the last month. With Olympics over, although I am into some of the Paralympic sports, it’s time to find some new shows to enjoy. Here’s what I’ve been up to:

Apple TV+

Bad Monkey- Apple TV+

Did you LOVE Vince Vaughn in Swingers? His fast talking, Mr Sunshine personality shines in Bad Monkey. Granted, I’m only three episodes in, but we’ve really enjoyed his dry humor and the character he portrays in Bad Monkey. He has great chemistry with all his costars and always keeps you on your toes.

Streaming Sister Take: For a detective type show, you don’t get the typical feel of a murder mystery. Plus, anything that has Zach Braff as a guest star is good in my book.

Lady in the Lake- Apple TV+

This one was a hit and miss for me. Felt like there could’ve been 3 less episodes and not lost a lot. But if you stick with it, a surprise twist takes it home nicely. Natalie Portman always delivers, and her take on a modern woman in the 60’s in Baltimore puts today in perspective.

Streaming Sister’s Take: If you LOVE murder mystery, check it out. If it isn’t your first pick – skip.

Hulu

Okay, this one is NOT for all of you. BUT, if you are, will be, or have been a Dance Mom. This show is entertaining. I am in the category of Current Dance Mom (how the hell did that happen to me?) and I watched every episode with my kid. For those of you who grew up on the Abby Lee version, this is not that. A new coach Glo Hampton, has taken on the challenge of becoming national champions. As always, the worst part is always how gross the Dance Moms are to each other and the coach. The kids are typically innocent bystanders.

Streaming Sister Take: I actually used these episodes to educate my daughter on what she looks like when doing her hair for competition. There is a young girl named Ashlan who is so mean and rude to her mom, I can’t wait to call my daughter Ashlan during the next competition season so she knocks it off.

Was surprised when this one popped up on Hulu, so checked it out with the hubby on a Friday night. Well, we weren’t bored! From Director Yorgos Lanthimos, who brought us Poor Things last year, another wild ride is ahead of you. This is a movie that consists of three tales, using the same actors playing different characters. And almost all of the actors were in Poor Things, which gets a smidge confusing .

Streaming Sister Take: Jesse Plemons is a welcome addition to the cast and of the three stories, the third is by far the most interesting. If you enjoy off the wall story telling and interesting visuals, this is for you.

Netflix

Girls 5 Eva- Netflix

How did I miss this show? It was in my “suggested for you” category for a long time, but I just wasn’t feeling it. On a whim, I played episode 1, and then finished the series. Great cast for a girl band and absolutely hilarious. My favorite character is Gloria, played by Paula Pell, who’s death drop dance move leading to surgery almost killed me. Don’t get me wrong, not every episode is a hit, but overall I laughed a lot.

Streaming Sister Take: Andrew Rannels as the boy band husband of one member kills it. He is amazing. I would watch his show.

I can’t do Bachelor/Bachelorette/etc. Not sure why, not my thing, too emotional and pukey. But Love is Blind? Bring it on. The concept of falling in love without meeting the other person is so intriguing, and the British version didn’t disappoint. I’ve watched episodes in all countries, and the difference between our curiosities and questions is hilarious. UK is middle of the line, not too filthy, not too serious. It’s fun to guess who will stick together and who won’t make it to the alter.

Streaming Sister Take: I can’t get enough of this show, and I personally enjoyed not having Nick and Vanessa Lachey suck up all the oxygen. I was really wrong on a some of the couples making it/not making it….and I loved it.

Peacock

I’ll admit, I was not excited to watch a biker movie. Austin Butler was the only selling point for me going in. That said, this was a great movie! It wasn’t just about motorcycles, it was a great story of a motorcycle club in Chicago in the 60’s. Great overall cast and acting.

Streaming Sister Take: I spent the entire movie asking why I knew the actress playing Kathy. I hate when that happens. I looked her up and Jodie Comer is an English actress I enjoyed immensely in Killing Eve. She really transformed herself in this movie – one to watch for!

Anyone who recently watched the Netflix documentary on Scott Peterson and has heard rumblings of “maybe he’s innocent”, will enjoy this documentary straight from Scott’s mouth. Prison interviews and family interviews, sharing of “evidence” not allowed in his trial and the news that the LA Innocence Project picked up his case – there’s a lot to unpack here.

Streaming Sister Take: Ummmm…he’s guilty as hell. I was not swayed. Will you be?

Prime

Mr. & Mrs. Smith- Amazon Prime

Okay, this one is NOT new, but I ignored it. I shouldn’t have. I LOVE Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. They are hilarious. This show is a hit not just with me, but my husband – which isn’t always an easy match. We aren’t through the series yet, but we’ve thoroughly enjoyed it so far. If you missed Maya in PEN13, her unique sense of humor and ability to “go there” is unparalleled. And Donald Glover is just freaking cool.

Streaming Sister Thoughts: From Brad and Angelina, these two hold up. A different take on a classic.

Max

My husband looked at me like I’d lost my mind when I hit play on episode one of this show. But the number of times we made audible noises – “oh my god”, “NOOO”, or laughed out loud were numerous.  This documentary from the people who brought you Tiger King follows Tonia Haddix – one of the most interesting people alive – who has a passion for chimpanzees and animals. When PETA gets involved and monkeys are ordered removed, things just start getting interesting. Solid crazy documentary.

Streaming Sister Thoughts: A mix of Tan Mom and bad lashes, this lady does not give AF about authorities. Her responses while in court online are hilarious, and she doesn’t hit mute. Can’t wait to see where this one goes!
