Why You Should Make Watermelon Water This Summer

Did you know this was a thing? I didn't until I recently attended a Soul Food Festival on a blazing hot day and ordered a giant glass of it to go with our BBQ. Forget the BBQ...this was AMAZING! My son and I kept fighting over the straw. I mean, I like watermelon, but I now LOVE watermelon water. I looked up how to make it and it was an easy, immediate hit. Had to share.

Watermelon Water

  • One ripe, seedless watermelon (I used one small one, but whatever size can fill your blender)

  • 2-4 C Water (again, whatever fills your blender)

  • 1/2 C Sugar

Cut the watermelon into chunks and place in your blender. Add the water and blend until smooth (about 30 seconds). Pour into a pitcher and add the sugar. Stir that up vigorously. Serve chilled over ice. You can add mint or other garnish to make it look cute.

A couple of thoughts:

  • The more ripe the watermelon, the sweeter the water. My watermelon was almost too ripe and getting too mealy to eat, but it made the perfect watermelon water.

  • You can add or take away the sugar depending on your taste.

  • I'm not sure why you don't just add the sugar directly into the blender? I'm going to try that on my next batch.

  • You could easily use this concoction to mix up a great cocktail or mocktail.

  • I'm pretty sure this was the muse for Harry Styles when he wrote the song "Watermelon Sugar".
